12 Ways to Go Big on Halloween Without Going Broke

I’ll just say it: we’re a full-blown Halloween family. Not the kind that casually buys a pumpkin or throws on a witch hat last-minute. We’re the go big or go home type. The kind who starts planning costumes in September, counts down to October 1st, and has as many bins labeled “HALLOWEEN” as we do for Christmas.

It’s our favorite time of year, hands down.

By the time mid-October rolls around, our house doesn’t just celebrate Halloween. It transforms. Picture a spooky-but-charming blend between a haunted mansion and a Pinterest board that got a little too excited. We’ve got faux cobwebs draped over the chandeliers, full-size skeletons lounging in suspiciously casual poses on the couch, bats flying across the windows, and orange twinkle lights casting a warm (and slightly eerie) glow from the balcony.

The boys love it, our friends expect it, and honestly? I look forward to the decorating almost as much as the holiday itself. It’s playful, a little theatrical, and just the right amount of over-the-top, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

We go big and we love every second of it.

🎃 The Decorations? They’re a Whole Thing.

I’m not saying we compete with Disneyland, but I am saying that our Halloween bin collection may or may not have outgrown the actual storage closet.

We’ve collected everything from creepy cloth to motion-sensor ghouls (which still make me jump) and dozens of little LED candles that make our living room look like the set of a gothic novel. We even set up a fog machine one year. Did it make the porch slippery? Yes. Did it look amazing? Also yes.

The funny part? Some of the best decorations we own, especially the ones people always ask about, were super affordable finds under $10. Things like:

I’ve learned to focus on items that are reusable, durable, and easy to store (because nothing’s scarier than a broken plastic tombstone on October 29th). The best finds are at:

  • Aliexpress – So much to choose from and very low prices.
  • Amazon – Amazing deals and quick delivery.
  • Dollar Tree – Cute decoration for as cheap as $1.50.

🍬 Trick-or-Treating, But Make It Budget-Friendly

Here’s the thing no one tells you about Halloween: treats add up. Between school parties, neighborhood trick-or-treaters, and the kids’ own candy stashes, we could easily spend over $100 just on sugar.

So I’ve learned a few tricks to make it sweet without the sting:

  • I buy our candy early, but only after the sales start. (And I use bulk mix packs that stretch further.)

  • I mix in non-candy treats like glow sticks and stickers, which kids weirdly love.

  • For our own boys, we do a little “Halloween gift” bag with themed goodies, things like spooky socks, themed puzzle, or a Halloween Activity Book. It’s our fun little tradition that keeps the focus off just candy.

🕸️ The Costumes? Let’s Just Say I Have a Morticia Addiction

I don’t even want to tell you how many times I’ve dressed up as Morticia Addams over the years. It’s embarrassing. And also… completely fabulous.

She’s my go-to last-minute costume, and I already have the black dress, the red lipstick, and the mysterious vibe down. My husband has done Gomez more than once (obviously) and our boys have been everything from baby vampires to inflatable dinosaurs. One year we even did a full family monster theme, and it might have been the peak of my Halloween life.

The secret to affordable costumes?

  • Reuse and repurpose. I keep a bin of wigs, masks, and accessories that we rotate year to year.

  • Start early. We scout Amazon in September and grab costumes like this or accessory kits like these before they sell out or get overpriced.

  • DIY when we can. Black clothes, a little makeup, and a dollar-store cape go a long way.

👻 Hosting a Halloween Party? You Don’t Have to Spend a Fortune

We’ve hosted a few Halloween parties over the years. Sometimes for the kids and their friends, sometimes for the whole family (read: snacks + wine + costumes = chaos and fun).

And I’ve learned how to do it on a budget without sacrificing the fun:

The best part? The kids think it’s magical. And honestly, so do I.

Halloween doesn’t have to be expensive to be epic. Over the years, we’ve figured out how to go all out with decorating, dressing up, partying and trick-or-treating, without blowing the budget.

It’s one of those holidays that lets everyone in the family be a little weird, a little creative and a lot excited. And in our house, that’s something worth celebrating.

So yes, I’ll probably be Morticia again this year. And no, I don’t care if it’s cliché because Halloween is supposed to be fun and we’re very committed to the bit.

Got a favorite Halloween tip, costume hack or budget-friendly spooky find? I’d love to hear it. (Bonus points if it glows in the dark.)
